SGT Jesse Hambrick of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference Monday, providing some updates to the shooting that occurred on Thursday. Jonathan Freeman, a veteran math teacher at Lithia Springs High School, was named as the victim. SGT Hambrick did state unequivocally that this was an intentional self-inflicted gunshot wound.
SGT Hambrick confirmed that Freeman did bring the gun with him that morning, and that the teacher was found by an “employee”. SGT Hambrick clarified that the employee did find Freeman, not the other way around as other outlets had previously reported. DCSO did state that Freeman did leave the location where he initially shot himself and enter another classroom.
No decision regarding criminal charges has been made now.
SGT Hambrick did report that counselors were available on Friday and are still available today.
Thursday August 17, 2017, Lithia Springs High School classes were cancelled after a teacher suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his classroom at approximately 7:15AM. No students were present in the building at the time the incident occurred.
“This had nothing to do with the school system. We just want the community to know that” said Hambrick during his remarks.
