The two-time State Champion Rome Wolves boast a defense that completely overwhelmed opponents in the 2017 season. While the offense was setting the Georgia GHSA Single-Season Scoring Record, the Rome defense averaged 44 tackles per game while posting 15 interceptions and a jaw-dropping 28 sacks. Senior Defensive End, Jamarcus Chatman was a key component on the line for Defensive Coordinator Wayne Groves. The 6′ 3″ 260 lb strong side end posted 48.5 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, 26 assist and 6.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one blocked kick during his senior season. Rome’s defense allowed just 9 points per game, and posted five shutouts, including a 38-0 win against Warner Robbins in the State Championship. And in the big games, the Rome Defense played BIG. Over the course of the post season, Rome outscored opponents 198-17 and posted two shutouts. The 45-7 win over powerhouse Buford was the worst loss for the Buford Wolves in half a century.
Head Coach John Reid has been hosting college coaches all season and the last few weeks saw Kirby Smart (Georgia), Mark Richt (Miami) and Willie Taggart (Florida State), all stopping by to check out his stable of talent.
For Jamarcus Chatman, the choice has now officially been narrowed to his Top 4: North Carolina, Miami, Virginia Tech and Florida State. Richt and some Miami staff recently made an in-home visit with Chatman and he admits to being very impressed with FSU Coach Willie Taggart and D-line coach Odell Haggins when they stopped into the Chatman home. Jamarcus has made official visits to all of his top 4 schools and plans on announcing Friday, National Signing Day.
